Five minutes with Nomusa Khumalo, Head of Customer Engagement & New Business Development for Africa & Middle East
1. What inspired you to work in the travel industry?
So a series of fortunate events have landed me to the travel industry. My first fond memory of travel must have been when I was probably 6 or 7 years old, when I flew with our legacy carrier, South African Airways. Now back then, flying was an occasion! I remember staring up in awe of those gorgeous unicorn princesses, professionally known as Cabin Crew and wanting to be just like them when I grew up. The criteria however, as I would later learn, was very strict in those days which really translated to model like features, one of which eluded to height. It is at that point where my dreams were dashed, as those who have met me in person will know that I have somewhat of a dropped suspension.
Fast forward, I now have the privilege of training and interacting with Cabin Crew, which is really a small reminder to be careful of what you wish for …
Honestly though, it really has been a series of unplanned, but fortunate events that have led me to travel, but for which I am incredibly grateful for, as my career in travel has been one filled with many possibilities that have allowed me to learn so much about myself in the process.
2. What do you enjoy the most in your role here at TRS?
It definitely must be interacting with people. I have had the privilege of wearing 3 different hats during my time here at TRS. Which has rewarded me with the opportunity to interact with all departments and build meaningful relationships across the board, which has enabled my success and fulfilment in the roles that I have operated in.
3. What do you enjoy the most about working in travel in general?
The opportunity to travel and dare I say, the added perk of not paying retail prices for some of my favourite perfume brands thanks to the amazing staff sales. Buying & Finance, please keep them coming.
On a career aspect, working at TRS specifically has stretched and challenged me in a way that I did not anticipate. It’s one of the many things I feel incredibly blessed in. I have also had the privilege of being led by the most amazing managers who have always made room for me at their table. That level of support is gold and when you find it, you treasure it.
4. What is your favourite travel destination?
Paris, specifically for the Museu de louvre which is on my bucket list as I’m a closet art fan.
5. What do you enjoy doing outside work?
Spending time with my children and family, whether it be cooking or outdoor activities. Those are moments I cherish the most, as well as a bit of netball as I really enjoy team sports.
